My name is Christine Marquette and I'm a registered and licensed dietitian with Marquette Nutrition and Fitness and I have been asked about deficiency of Lipoic Acid. Lipoic Acid actually can be made by the body so at this point there really have not been any cases reported of deficiency of Lipoic Acid. In all the various human studies that have been done nothing has every shown that a person has actually been deficient in it. Now what exactly the definition of deficient is that's another thing that is up for debate. Some of the research being done with Lipoic Acid is actually looking at supplementation with it to see if there are various health benefits, for example there have been studies on it to treat diabetic neuropathy. There have been studies on it to treat fatigue associated with MS so from that perspective additional supplementation showing the benefit that may in turn cause the definition of deficiency to be revisited. They may look and say well you know what the levels that we thought were normal actually were too low so right now we can say that there aren't any specific cases of deficiency but again there is the possibility that the levels that we think of as normal right now may be changed in the future but as of right now there are no particular symptoms or side effects associated with the deficiency of Lipoic Acid.
