My name is Christine Marquette and I'm a registered and licensed dietitian with Marquette Nutrition and Fitness and I'm going to talk to you about the Diabetic Food Pyramid. The Diabetic Food Pyramid is different than the regular food guide pyramid. In this pyramid foods are grouped together based on their carbohydrate and their protein content. So for example one major difference at the base of the pyramid in the traditional food guide pyramid has been the bread and cereal group. Well in the diabetic food guide pyramid it does include breads and cereals but it also includes legumes and it includes some starchy vegetables such as potatoes, corn, peas, those vegetables, even though they are vegetables they have a very high carbohydrate content so for that reason they are included in this group. Another big change is the protein group. In the traditional pyramid this group includes beans but again remember beans have carbohydrate to them, not just protein so since they have a higher carbohydrate content beans are actually placed in the base of the pyramid. The protein group has all types of meats, nuts and seeds. It also includes cheese. This is another change from the traditional food guide pyramid. In the traditional food guide pyramid cheese is included with the dairy group, however, cheese has very little almost none as far as carbohydrates is concerned so it is placed in the protein group. The dairy group in the diabetic pyramid group is only milk and yogurt so those are your major differences. The other thing to keep in mind in the diabetic food guide pyramid is that it still includes a variety from each group. Your base is still your starches in moderation particularly emphasizing whole grains. You want a lot of your fruits and vegetables. You want your protein foods in moderation, your milk in moderation and at the top is the fats so even though they are healthy fats you still have to practice moderation. So those are some aspects of the diabetic food guide pyramid.
