"Hello my name is Dr. Carol Clark. I'm a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and sex therapist here in Miami, Florida. In this clip we're going to talk about facts about the birth control patch. The birth control patch was developed to help offset some of the side effects of birth control pills. Birth control pills release hormones into the body but they are taken orally and so they go through the stomach and hence they end up going through the liver and kidneys and this can have a bad effect on the liver and kidneys over time. They also are released in varying dosages because even though you take one pill if you drink something or you are eating more or at different times of day it is going to be released into your body irregularly. The patch releases a steady amount of hormone through your skin and so it bypasses the liver and doesn't have the side effects there and you don't have to remember to take a pill every day so that's a benefit for many women. Once again this is Dr. Carol Clark in Miami, Florida."
