"I'm Major Carole Emmeron of the Salvation Army. My husband and I co-direct the services of the Salvation Army in Buchanan County so that includes shelter, the core community center, the thrift store, community outreach, disaster services and anything else the Salvation Army would be involved in here in Buchanan County. Some of the charities of our homeless people would of course be the Salvation Army. Often times there's a Christian mission, there are rescue missions around, community action partnership would know you never stay, those are government run agencies so they would be a good contact for people. If you're not sure, I would say probably check with like the local sheriff's office. The United Way could point people to where services might be available. As far as services to homeless people and helping them to get back on their feet, there are numerous agencies for instance when we work with veterans, the Department of Veterans Affairs has some supportive housing programs, Catholic charities has supportive housing programs for not just those who are generally homeless but for those who may have some mental disabilities or if they're reentering from incarcerations. So it just really depends on what definition of homelessness and what has caused that person and then what the community has available. Also now mostly across the country the 211 information line, so if people simply dial 211, they will contact them and give them what kinds of resources might be available in their local area. Thank you again for your interest in the issue of homelessness. This is Major Carol at the Salvation Army, St. Joseph, Missouri and I just want to encourage you to do what you can to prevent homelessness. There are many ways people can help by volunteering, by giving of resources, shampoos, soaps, laundry detergent, blankets, socks, underclothes, by volunteering your time with an organization. So again, thank you for your interest in this particular video and if you have any questions, please feel free to call your local Salvation Army I'm sure that we can put you to work and make an impact in each community that you represent."
