My name is Christine Marquette and I'm a registered and licensed dietitian with Marquette Nutrition and Fitness and I'm going to talk to you about alkalized water. Water, you can hear it called by various things, ionizers are something that has become very popular. Water ionizers are said to cause the water to become more alkaline. Or you may hear the term alkalizer. So as far as purported health benefits, a lot of the companies that tout these machines will actually say that it improves all sorts of things in your health as far as improved digestion, may help relieve joint pain, it can help relieve high blood pressure. Unfortunately there really aren't any scientific studies that indicate that this is the case. In addition, most water has a slightly alkaline basis to it. For example all that really means is that the water is hard, it has some minerals to it. It may have a little bit of sodium, it may have some calcium or magnesium. A lot of people that have well water, their water already is a bit alkaline. Pure water, pure distilled water is the only water that does not have any minerals to it, so they're completely removed so it's just completely pure hydrogen and oxygen. So that's about the only type of water that doesn't actually have anything in it. Most common tap water also has minerals added to it. It will often be fluoridated. So it will have some mineral fluoride. So for that reason it is slightly alkaline as well. So actually purchasing a water ionizer or paying for water that says that it is alkaline really isn't necessary. The other thing to keep in mind is that when you drink water most of it isn't actually absorbed by your stomach. It's actually absorbed by your intestine. So when the water enters your stomach, initially, even if it is slightly alkaline, the stomach acid will neutralize it. So it will become PH neutral. When it enters your small intestine some of the bile acid secretions there will actually cause it to be a little more alkaline. So any water, even if you drank distilled water, when it enters your small intestine, it will actually become slightly alkaline. So again, there's really not a reason to buy specifically alkaline water or a water ionizer to try to make your tap water more alkaline. So those are just a few tips on alkaline water.
