My name is Christine Marquette and I'm a registered and licensed dietitian with Marquette Nutrition and Fitness and I'm going to talk to you about black cohosh root side effects. Black cohosh root has been used primarily to help reduce the symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes. One of the things that can happen with black cohosh, exactly how it works is not extremely well understood but one of the things that is thought to occur is that it can increase blood flow to the pelvic area and it can also stimulate endometrial basically stimulation so for that reason one of the side effects if you took it and you were actually still as a woman if you were still menstruating it could actually increase blood flow and therefore cause very very heavy bleeding which would not be a good thing. It could actually decrease your ability to clot so you definitely would not want to take it if you are actually still menstruating. Another thing is because it does cause that stimulation in your endometrial lining it can also cause cramping in some women or a lot of abdominal pain so those are some potential side effects. Another thing is in pregnant women they should completely avoid black cohosh root again because of that stimulation to the endometrial lining it could actually cause miscarriages. So for pregnant women or for women who are breastfeeding it is very important that they don't take black cohosh because it could cause many problems as far as in men there are really not very well studied side effects of black cohosh. Some men have actually tried it for increasing blood flow to their sex organs but again that is not very well studied and the side effects are not very well known in men. However in women there are very well side effects for black cohosh. Again you should not take it if you are still menstruating or if you are pregnant.
