"My name is Christine Marquette, and I'm a registered and licensed dietitian with Marquette Nutrition and Fitness. And I'm going to talk to you about how alcohol affects blood pressure. Alcohol has actually been shown to increase blood pressure, so if you're already having issues with high blood pressure, it's best to avoid alcohol. If you're taking any type of blood pressure medication, it is extremely important that you avoid alcohol because it can interact with many different types of medications. So as far as the potential side effect, it could prevent your medication from working properly. With some of the medications, it can actually intensify the effect so it's hard to control the dosage. So again, very important that you avoid any intake of alcohol if you're already taking blood pressure medications. If you're not taking blood pressure medications and you're trying to lower your blood pressure with your eating habits and with your exercise, it's also important that you avoid alcohol because it does increase your blood pressure. It will make it that much more difficult for you to get it back down to normal strictly with how you are eating and how you are exercising. So again, the primary effect of alcohol on your blood pressure is that it does increase your blood pressure and could potentially lead to long-term problems with high blood pressure."
