"Hi. I'm Dr. Carol Clark. I'm a sex therapist and licensed mental health counselor here in Miami, Florida. In this clip, we're going to talk about how to compare estrogens in birth control pills. Estrogens can be either natural or synthetic. Synthetic are chemicals that are made in the lab, and they simulate the hormone estrogen, which is in everyone's body, but especially, of course, women's bodies. And birth control pills use estrogen to stop the ovary from expelling an egg each month. So synthetic estrogen is made in the lab. Natural estrogen comes from pregnant mare's urine. There's mares, horses, that are kept pregnant, and their urine is used to produce the estrogen that goes into the birth control. And certainly, animal rights activists and animal lovers often object to using estrogen in that way. There's also plant-based estrogens that re used in a lot of over-the-counter pills. Once again, this is Dr. Carol Clark from Miami, Florida."
