How to Fertilize Peach Trees

"You just acquired a peach tree and you want to know how to fertilize it. This is Richard Skinner at Hawkin's Corner Nursery in Plant City, Florida and we're going to talk about two ways on peach trees. The first one is of course if a peach tree you just acquired from a nursery and you want to make it grow properly. That tree has got a confined area of roots so consequently you want to fertilize it with something that's not going to burn the roots. The best thing is water soluble. Miracle Grow, Peter's and several other companies put it out. Something in a plant starter maybe. The only thing is you have to do this about every 10 days to 2 weeks. So you have to follow the instructions on your container. Now you want to do that for several months after you've planted your peach tree and then go over to your regular granular fruit tree fertilizer. That's where I'll pickup where you have an existing tree. If you have an existing tree that's been in the ground for more than 2 years and it's not doing too well, the chances are pretty good it's not being fertilized properly. So a rule of thumb on fertilizing your peach tree is approximately 1 pound for every year of age of the tree up to about 6 or 7 pounds and apply that 3 to 4 times a year. It's going to depend on your soil and what part of the country you're in. If you're in the warm climates of the south, you want to do that early on, like in February and maybe at the latest early March. If you're in the northern part of the country, of course you'll have to adjust to your time, to your tempered time zone.
