Hi this is Yolanda Vanveen and in this segment we're going to talk about how to prune azalea shrubs. I love my azaleas, they come in such vibrant colors and they're so beautiful when they bloom and every garden should have an azalea in it. But if you just plant it and forget it, a lot of times it will get very lanky and look like a Medusa and it just won't look as attractive as if you prune it every year. So the best time to prune your azalea is right after it's done blooming because it will set buds for the next year. You can also prune in the fall and the winter as long as you don't cut too many of those buds out. And then that way you'll get lots of blooms the next year. And the rule is thumb is don't trim more than one third of the plant down. And so cut out all the wild runners and the bottom suckers and even it out a little bit in the middle cutting out every third branch and then that way it will get more sunlight in the middle for the next year and you'll get even more blooms. And by just taking the time to prune it here and there, and the dead branches out, you'll get lot more blooms the following year.
