Hi this is Yolanda Vanveen, and in this segment, we're going to talk about how to prune Weigela. Now Weigela is a beautiful shrub that has little flowers on it, and it's a great addition to your garden. But you should prune it from time to time, because then it will grow even more evenly and you'll get lots of flowers on them the next year. So just like other shrubs, the rule of thumb is only prune one-third at at time, even if you have a large plant and you want to slowly prune it back just one-third at a time each year, and then that way, the plant will do even better and be more even. So the best time to prune a Weigela, is after it's just got done flowering. So you want to cut back the branches that have bloomed to the unflowered side branches, and you leave only one or two of these to each stem. So you cut some of the oldest stems to the ground. So you want to think out a lot of the new suckers, because they'll just kind of be overwhelming, and just leave a few of the old ones and a few of the new ones on the plant. Another simple rule is, as soon as your Weigela is done blooming, just cut it back one-third all the way around, and make sure not to get all the way down to the stem with no leaves. Make sure there's still leaves on the plant, because if you cut it all the way back to the wood, then it will not regrow. You've got to make sure there's some new growth, or some leaves on the plant while you're pruning it back. So by pruning your Weigela back one-third each year, you will find the next year it will grow very lush, and very full, and you'll get even more flowers.
