Lagavulin is a single malt whiskey from the Islay area of Scotland. It therefore can be referred to as a scotch. It is from a distillery that was founded in eighteen sixteen. Its flavor characteristics are intense, it is very peaty and very smoky. However it's extremely well made and very very smooth. It has somewhat of a luxurious creamy mouth feel with a real woodsy cedary sort of effect on the palate. Weighing in at eighty six proof, Lagavulin has enough fire power to keep you warm on a cold night. However, it's not so hot that it requires ice to cool it down. Many folks believe one or two cubes will open up the flavor and subsequently make it a little bit smoother and little bit more enjoyable. Personally, I just kind of like it neat. The other interesting thing about Lagavulin is, though it's a small distillery it operates three shifts a day, seven days a week, three hundred and sixty five days a year to keep up with the demand of the fanatical followers who drink nothing but Lagavulin.
