You just received a knock on the door and it was a sheriff or process server that served you with divorce papers. And you're now sitting on your couch in your living room reading this and you don't really understand it, and you don't know whether you have to sign this or what the next step is. Hello, I'm Robert Todd and I'm here to answer the question can you refuse to sign divorce papers? Well of course you can refuse to sign anything. But it may not accomplish what you think is going to be accomplished. You can't avoid the inevitable. if you're being sued for divorce and it really doesn't matter which state this is, you can't avoid the inevitable. You may be able to slow down the process but you can't stop it. So one of the first things you want to do is read the papers you've been served with and under all circumstances you want to file some type of response even if it is something to the extent that you object and you don't agree. What we would strongly urge you to do is to consider hiring the services of a family law attorney to explain the papers that have been served upon you and explain your rights and obligations so that you can then decide competently how you wish to respond and where you go from there. I'm Robert Todd and thank you for watching.
