About Medium Density Fiberboard

Medium density fiberboard, also known as MDF, is a much cheaper alternative to solid wood for many home improvement projects, and it is often created from recycled sawdust. Hello, my name is Mark Blocker. In this segment we're going to cover what is medium density fiberboard. What fiberboard is, is a product, a wood product made from a real fine fiber of wood, it's glued together and then pressed or rolled or molded in to a desired shape. It comes in a lot of different forms. Here are a few examples. This is a piece of paneling. It's three quarter inch thick; MDF is an abbreviation for medium density fiberboard. And it's used in all different types of applications. And MDF can also be found in a lot of different molding products in all different shapes and designs. And what the major benefit of MDF is, is the cost. It's much cheaper than an actual wood product cut from a wood tree. A lot of times it's made from left over sawdust, the by products from the milling process so it doesn't go to waste. So it is a lot more economical cost wise than the actual wood itself. One of the main drawbacks to MDF is if it gets wet, it expands and deteriorates rapidly. If you use it in a molding format like on a baseboard in a bathroom somewhere where it can be exposed to a real high humidity rate or actual standing water on the floor, you're going to want to make sure that you seal it up on both sides. Make sure it primed all the way around before it's painted and installed. And that'll help protect it in those moist environments. So that's what medium density fiberboard is.
