"Hi, I'm Dr. Carol Clark. I'm a sex therapist and licensed mental health counselor here in Miami, Florida. In this clip, we're going to talk about the different types of birth control IUDs. IUD means intrauterine device -- a device that is put into a woman's uterus to prevent pregnancy. And there are two types. One is hormonal, and this is an IUD that releases the hormone progestin into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. And it does this by thinning out the uterine lining, which would keep the fertilized egg from attaching itself. It usually prevents the egg from being released from the ovary, and it also causes a thickening of the cervical mucus membrane lining that will help keep the sperm from reaching the uterus. The other type is a copper IUD, and the copper has some of the same effects in disrupting the lining of the uterus and preventing a fertilized egg from attaching itself to the uterus. Once again, this is Dr. Carol Clark from Miami, Florida."
