Hi, my name is Samir Malik, and I'm a private tutor for middle school and high school students in the Austin area. Today, we're going to be discussing mass percentages. Now, a mass percentage is the percentage of that particular solution in an overall solution. And the way it's calculated is you take that mass of that percentage and you divide that by the total mass of the solution to give you the mass percentage of that particular solution. I'd like to illustrate this with an example as well, so if you like to take a look here I'll show you how it works with this specific example. So, we have our mass percentage will equal the mass of a substance over the mass of the whole solution, so for example, times one hundred percent. So for example, if we have the mass of chlorine being one gram of chlorine over one hundred grams of solution you would have a total of, mass percentage of chlorine in your solution would be one percent. So, we're able to understand here by calculating and being able to define mass percentages. It's a crucial fact, because it helps us understand if we have a pool filled with water and we want to know how much chlorine is in that swimming pool we're able to find out by using mass percentages, and finding out how much chlorine in grams was put into the swimming pool, divided by the total amount of water that is in that swimming pool to be able to calculate the mass percentage of chlorine.
