My name is Doug Leavy. I am the principle agent and owner of Strategic Insurance Services in Clearwater, Florida, and I'm going to talk to you today about how to work for an insurance company. An insurance company like any other large business has several different departments. One of the biggest things I would suggest is to try early to get an internship. You can get an internship ranging anywhere from claims to underwriting to accounting to finance to marketing. The experience as an intern will allow you to see the company and its total parts in an over view of everything that they do. I would also strongly suggest getting very comfortable with people and learning some basic sales skills if you ever want to be a part of the sales process or the marketing process of the insurance company. Often their departments and area heads known as wholesalers and these wholesalers are going to function to help support agents out in the field with the sales process. Some people think that because they are working for an insurance company they're actually not in sales but in fact at the end of the day that is what keeps the lights on, that's what makes those insurance companies run.
