HI, my name is Charlotte Skiles. I'm a Nutrition Consultant and Clinical Herbalist with Eat in Peace Wellness Consulting located in Austin, Texas. And today's topic is the smoking affects on blood pressure. So smoking affects blood pressure, ultimately through nicotine which tightens the system, it tightens the cardio-vascular system and that tight system then leads to high blood pressure. There's another mechanism of action there as well through nicotine's effect on insulin. Nicotine raises insulin levels. Most people in this country do not need that because they're diet already raises insulin levels. So, smoking contributes to blood pressure in those two ways; constriction of the vasculature and the excessive insulin in the system which both contribute to blood pressure.
