Measure a Floor in Square Feet
To measure a floor in square feet, measure the length and width of the room, multiply those together, and subtract any islands or cut-ins that appear in the room. Add 5 percent to 10 percent to the square footage of a room when ordering flooring supplies with advice from a licensed remodeling contractor in this free video on home maintenance.

Hi I'm Tim Gipson and I'm going to talk about how to measure a floor in square feet. Now in order to do this you just want to have a tape measure and what you want to do is you want to measure the room in length and width. So we take our tape measure and we would lay it out so I am looking and I have 14 feet that way so I write that figure down and then I would want to measure the width so do the same thing, take the tape measure and I would get the width and say I am looking to this point right here then that would be ten feet. So if I had a room that was 14 feet X 10 feet I would multiply those two numbers together and that would be 140 and that would actually give me 140 square feet so now if I am looking to tile or buy carpet or wood flooring then I would know that I would need 140 square feet. Now keep in mind that when you are buying materials for a new floor it is usually a good idea to add about 5 to 10% of waste so in this case if it was 140 square feet we would probably be safe and just add another 10 to 15 square feet in top of our amount that we would be getting. Now keep in mind that we would have some areas like this that is rectangular but then you may have an island like this, then you would need to deduct this island out so we would measure this and it is about 2 and 1/2 feet X 3 and 1/2 feet so we could calculate that out and that is roughly going to be a little less than 8 square feet. So if we had 140 square feet we would take that 8 square feet out and that would net us 132 square feet and then we would add our extra in that we would need. So just remember that when you are trying to get your square footage is you just take the length in feet, multiply it by the width and then you deduct out any areas like an island or something like that that might be in there. I'm Tim Gipson and that's how to measure the square footage of a floor.
