Good afternoon. My name is Tom Brintzenhofe, certified master tech, out of Redding, Pa, and today, we're going to talk a little bit about how to change a spark plug. Some of these engines they make today, aren't too bad. Some of the complex V8's, some of the times that you get a V6, it's a little tighter fit. Those are a little bit of a pain. Sometimes you have to get up underneath from the back side, and get them, but this particular V6 isn't all that bad, and I'll show you real quick how to change the spark plugs. We're going to start here. It's a little easier to show you on the front three here, just twist your spark plug boot a little bit, clockwise, counterclockwise, just loosen it up a little bit. You just don't want to just yank on these things, and pull them off. You usually end up tearing your spark plug wiring, and that makes for a more expensive habit to do. Just give it a little tug after you twist it, and stick it up out of the way. One thing you might want to get yourself, is a spark plug socket. I prefer these longer ones that have magnets in them, a little easier to reach in these longer holes here. You don't necessarily need one, a little common three inch one is fine, but these work a lot better, I've found over the years, but just slide your spark plug socket right over your spark plug, so it fits on there nice and snug. Get yourself an extension, a good ratchet. It's easier if you can manage to get your extension and your ratchet up out of the way, so you're not smacking yourself in your knuckles, and your hands, all over this engine, but just turn it counterclockwise. Typically, they come out fairly easy, get it working nice and smooth. Actually, just turn it counterclockwise, it will come right out here. If you ever get one that doesn't come out, the best thing I could tell you to do, is just stop what you're doing, take it to a shop, chances are the head has got to come off, and that's just not a pretty sight, but it's easier, if you don't want to go through that extension. If you get one stuck in there that won't come out, don't force it, because these things do break. They're only made of porcelain up in here, with a small metal electrode, that goes up through the middle of it, and they will snap off pretty easy. Try to keep your socket on there straight. Don't pry on it at an angle, because like I said, you'll break this top end off, and once you do that , the spark plug is useless, but that's about all there is to it, in changing a spark plug and all. You just take your new one, and same process, stick it in there, put it in your socket first, like so, and then stick this in here, and turn it with your hand, and get it nice and started first. Get it as tight as you can get it with your fingers, then tighten it up with your ratchet. You don't want to go in there with a ratchet first, without getting it started, and try tightening these things up, in your cross throttle. That creates a lot of headaches, and a lot of excess work, and you really don't want to go down that road, but take your time, and it's a real simple job, on how to change a spark plug.
