How to Mulch Flowers

"Hi. I'm Stan DeFreitas, Mr. Green Thumb. We're at Willow Tree Nursery in St. Petersburg, Florida. And everybody likes to have beautiful flowering plants. And when you have them either in containers or in the ground, one of the things you might wish to do is to help take the mulch and put it around the base of the plants. You can see that by putting some mulch in around here, we can help do a couple of things. One, we can help hold the moisture in the container. Remember, containers dry out a lot quicker than in the ground. And that can be a problem. We also can help hold some of that fertilizer. Remember those little beads that you see around your plants are normally little fertilizer beads. And you want to kind of hold that fertilizer into the container. Mulch can help you do that. It'll also help hold the moisture in. And the other thing it helps to do is keep out some of the weeds. Even in container plants, one of the biggest hassles and one of the biggest expenditures that nurseries have is hiring people to go in and mulch and, not just mulch, but keep those weeds out. If you can put a layer of mulch or a layer to hold down those weeds, you can cut out thousands of hours of weeding, which can be a major expense in the nursery and a problem for you in your backyard garden. Take the mulch, put it around the base of your plant. Keep it so that it's not up against the base of the plant, and it'll do a lot of good things for you.
