"Hi I'm Stan DeFreitas, Mr. Green Thumb. We're at Willow Tree Nursery in St. Petersburg, Florida. Raising tomatoes from seed, it's a fun project. You can do it when you're young, and you can do it when you're old. You can be eight, or ninety-eight. And you can still get the same kick out of seeing something grow. Now remember, with little seedlings, they'll germinate in about 10-14 days. When you take your little seedlings, they're going to be small little seeds. Put your little seeds into your hand, or into a seed producer and put them into the ground about one-quarter inch deep. If you go a lot deeper, it's tough for the little plant to have that much energy to grow up through the soil. If you put it right on the surface, well the wind might blow it away or some bird might come along and think that you're meals on wheels. So make sure you put them about one-quarter inch deep. Make sure normally that you have the soil moist. You want a nice, friable soil. So you just take some of these seeds and you kind of sprinkle them on the surface. And then you're going to cover it over with a good potting soil or some good mixture. Make sure that you have some type of covering, about a quarter inch deep. Take your little seeds and make sure that you get them just flat in the ground. You don't have to worry about placing them in any particular spot. You will have to come back in and kind a break some of the seedlings off as they come up, because if they're too close, that can be a problem. Or you have to separate them. When you plant little seedlings like we do with these tomatoes, make sure that you're going to have another pot, or another place to put them. Because eventually, once you start your little seedling, this is just the beginning stage. It's usually about 65-70 days from the time you start a seedling, to the time that you're ready to start having bloom and production. Growing tomatoes is a fun project.
