How to match ties with white shirts. When you have a white shirt it is kind of like a blank canvas, pretty much any color goes. Instead of matching with the shirts you tend to want to match it with either the suit or the sport coat or jacket that you are wearing. As you can see if you have a basic white shirt, pretty much any tie that you pick is going to go. It doesn't matter what color it is it will match. So to tie a half windsor you want the shirt to be at your fourth or fifth button not counting the neck, so about there, almost to your belly button. You start by crossing over and it goes up and around the short side, around the back, across the front, up and through the loop. To tighten it you just pull down and you start to shape your knot. That is your half windsor. O'kay so starting a windsor knot you want to start with the short end a lot smaller than you would any other knot because it takes up a lot of the tie. You are going to start by criss crossing and then wrapping around the smaller end. It goes all the way around the back and then around the other side, around the front to the back, up and through. Then to tighten it you just pull down and then pull the smaller end. That's your windsor knot.
