Hi I'm Laura from youngwritersworkshops.com and I'm going to talk about what do colleges look for in a writing sample? That is such a good question because everyone wants to know how to do well on their mission statement or statement of purpose for a college or just any writing sample and some really good adjectives to keep in mind are creative, unique, and ways that you can express your own curiosity, your enthusiasm for learning, your capacity for team work so think about ways that either in your statement that you write specifically for an application or the samples that you give you can express some of these things. There is not maybe one thing in particular that might stand out more than the others as being important for a college but they are looking for someone with a range of these capabilities and the potential to be a really curious and dedicated learner so one important aspect of that is self knowledge so the more that you can write in an honest way that shows that you have some knowledge of yourself and then that makes you more open to learning and to really dedicating yourself to the process of being a student and being a learner and being a team member. So think about some of these characteristics when you are choosing a writing sample or writing your statement of purpose and try to display these characteristics to make your writing more appealing to the college.
