"Here are some housebreaking tips for puppies. Remember initially the mother is going to stimulate the urination and the defecation of the puppies by cleaning that area and that all will take care of any mess initially. Then the puppies will start wandering around looking for a place to go to the bathroom. It's a very good idea at this point since they can't go outside necessarily to provide them with some clean item, hopefully that they'll urinate on and that will stimulate the other puppies to urinate in the same place. And then you'll want to keep replacing this. But what you are trying to get them to do is go to the bathroom in an area that is separate from their bedding. And this isn't a very difficult task as dogs are very clean natured and they don't want to go to the bathroom in their bedding. Once that's passed, and you've accomplished that the next step is acclimating your dog to enclosed area or crate training. You want to get your dog used to, being your puppy used to being in a crate comfortably and this is an opportunity for them to go somewhere to rest. And you can use that crate training to confine your puppy if when you take them outside they ought to play which is a typical puppy behavior rather then go to the bathroom and get down to business. And in that case you would bring them in and put them back into the crate and give them another opportunity ten minutes later. It's also a really good idea to pick a specific place for them to go the bathroom because the scent from having urinated and defecated before will help them, remind them that they should do it again."
