"How to get insurance to do contracting work. First of all, I suggest you call your local independent agent and they can help you through this process. But the basics of insurance for contracting work are the general liability policy as well as the worker's compensation policy. Anytime you have employees working for you, you do need a worker's compensation policy, and often as a subcontractor working for a general contractor, you will also need worker's compensation to satisfy those contractual agreements. General liability policy is also absolutely necessary for doing contracting work anytime you're either working on someone else's property, or building property for someone, or fixing someone's property, you need a general liability policy in case you do harm to someone else's stuff or hurt someone while you're there doing the work. General liability policy is going to be based on either payroll or sales, depending on the type of policy you purchase. Again, they'll take the payroll, or they'll take the sales, they'll multiply it by a rate and that'll give you your given premium for a general liability policy."
