"Hello my name is Dr. David Cathcart, and I'm from Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, MO. Dentistry is one of those areas where you're involved in direct patient contact, it's a specialized area of course dealing with the mouth and with the teeth. Dentists have to go to school for typically four years of undergraduate school, although you can get by in some cases with less, but very few people get by with less than three years of college and most require four. And then dental school is an additional four years. The first four years of college you go to are usually in the sciences, so most people will major at either chemistry or biology or something like that, and they usually are pre-dental programs. And then when you actually go to dental school there's two years of what's called didactic studies, which are basically where you spend your time learning about diseases and learning about anatomy and basically all book work, then the next two years is much more practical hands on working experience where you're working under the supervision of working dental professionals, where you'll learn the skills that are necessary to become a dentist. Dentist on average in this country make around 140 thousand dollars a year, of course some will make much more and some will make much less, but that's the average. Dentists who are in private practice, in other words they own their own practice, tend to make a little bit more than those dentists who are working for someone else. Thanks for taking this time to explore medical careers with me. Again, I'm Dr. David Cathcart with Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, MO."
