"OK this is John Pinelli, financial representative and today we're going to answer the question how much money do you need to start investing. Well if you're looking at starting a stock account at say your classic brokerage, the minimums that they would require would be maybe 500 dollars for most online brokerages, a thousand dollar minimums for other brokerages. Typically it's between that 500 to a thousand dollar range. Now do I recommend that you start investing with that amount of money? No, certainly not. I would say that you would need typically about 5,000 or more to start investing into individual stocks. Why do I say that amount of 5,000? Because you don't want to buy just one stock with your thousand or 500 dollars and expect that that stock is going to go up and do well. You want to be able to have enough money to buy a well diversified portfolio of stocks. Typically starting out you would want somewhere between 3 to 5 stocks within that 5,000 dollars just to start out and to provide you with some diversification within your portfolio. Diversification is going to eliminate a lot of the risks associated out there and if an individual company has troubles, an individual sector has troubles, you're eliminating some of that risk that's associated with just investing in one stock. Additionally, if you're only investing 500 or a thousand dollars and you're paying typically between 5 to 9 to 15 dollars per trade, a lot of your money that you're investing is going to be eaten up with transaction costs so that's another thing to consider when looking at amounts of money to start investing with. So this has been John Pinelli talking to you today about how much to start when investing."
