Composite numbers are integers greater than one that possess multiple factors. A composite number can also be defined as any number that is not a prime number. Learn about some examples of composite numbers, such as 10, 12 and 15, with information from a math teacher in this free video math lesson.

So what is the meaning of a composite number? Hi I'm Jimmy, I have been teaching college mathematics for nine years now and I'm here to discuss with you what composite numbers are. Now if you knew what prime numbers are, composite numbers are numbers that actually are not prime so there is actually kind of an opposite relationship between the two. So here is the definition of a composite number. It is an integer greater than 1. Now by integers we are talking about whole numbers but those whole numbers are going to be greater than 1 that is not prime. Now remember a prime number is a number whose factors are 1 and itself. Numbers like 2, 3, 5, 7, and 11 and I can keep going are examples of prime numbers because those numbers I just mentioned the only numbers that will go into it are 1 and themselves. Composite numbers involve more than 1 and itself as factors so here is a couple of examples for you. We have already mentioned 2 and 3 are primes so they wouldn't be composite numbers although 4 is a composite number because 2 is a factor of 4, two will go into 4. 5 is prime so it is not composite but 6 is a composite number because 1 and 6, 2 and 3, are also factors of 6. 2 and 3 will go into 6. 7 is a prime number so it is not composite but the number 8 is because besides 1 and 8, 2 and 4 will go into 8 as well so 8 is composite. You can definitely say 9 is a composite number as well because besides 1 and 9, 3 goes into 9 as well. 10 besides 1 and 10, 2 and 5 go into 10. 11 is a prime but 12 is also composite. I can keep going but as you can tell the number of primes are pretty infinite so far and the number of composite numbers are also just as long. So I'm Jimmy and this has been the meaning of a composite number.
