I use several teaching aids every time I see a patient, every six months. One, the most important, is a dental x-ray. Dental x-rays tell us a lot about teeth. They show us inside the tooth, they let us know if there's anything going on in between the teeth, below the gums, and at the root tip, so we can make sure that person has a healthy bone and tooth. Another one that we use, very common, is a tooth brush. We show people how to brush their teeth. Whether it is splitting up their mouth into four quadrants and showing them how to count in brushing their teeth, each section of their mouth, and we use floss. Because flossing is one of the hardest things that people don't always grasp. Because they have a hard time taking that little piece of string and doing a nice "circle c" motion in between their teeth and scrubbing on both sides and moving that through out their mouth. And another tool that we use is either a dental model, to either show them on the model if it helps them better, or we can also show them their mouth by using a mirror so that they can look while I'm flossing their teeth, and they can say "Oh I can do that." I basically show, tell, and do. I show them how it's done, I have them repeat it, and then I do it again. So that they can see how I'm doing it, how they're doing it, and see if they can perfect their flossing, and their brushing technique so we can have a healthy six month check up every time.
