Series Summary

St. Louis is the largest metropolitan area in Missouri. Sometimes written as Saint Louis, the city is named for King Louis IX of France. St. Louis is famous for its multiple French and German influences as well as having a Victorian past. Two events at the beginning of the 20th century, the 1904 World's Fair and the 1904 Olympic Games (the first ever held in the United States) are of particular pride to St. Louisans. The city has many nicknames, the most popular being 'Gateway City,' as it is seen as the Eastern/Western U.S. dividing mark. St. Louis is also called 'Gateway to the West' on behalf of the many people who migrated west through St. Louis via the Missouri River and other wagon trails. "My name is Eleanor Rooter and I have owned Componere Gallery for twenty-two years here in this wonderful loop area. We promote local artists primarily. I have a hundred and fifty artists on consignment and we have weekly exhibits every month so that you can come in and have, see different items. Each time you come in, things will be moved around. The artists take things in and out. So it's always interesting to come in and check out what we have. We have glass, clay and two dimensional paintings of oils, acrylics, rice paper, paintings on rice paper like Chinese style, just about anything you'd want to give as a gift or buy for your friend. Local artists has always been an important part of the business."
