"When you visit the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Gardens, you'll immediately notice some unique architecture as you enter the grounds. The zoo first opened in the mid eighteen hundreds as a private facility, but the majority of its buildings were built during a large scale reconstruction effort, which started at the beginning of the turn of the century. That's when the city took over and became the zoo's new owner. Most of the property's most famous buildings were built by 1911. They include the artificial Great and Small Rocks, that's the row of Transylvanian style buildings designed by Karoly Koos. The elephant-headed gate at the main entrance and the oriental elephant, became the symbol of the zoo. The Elephant House has a lookout tower that gives a panoramic view of the property. Korn?l Neuschloss designed both the gate and the elephant head. Many of the zoo's original buildings have been replaced, with the exception of the Elephant House.
