The Romans conquered the area around thirty-five BC, the Danube River acted as a defensive barrier against attacks from the Asiatic tribes during Roman times. The Roman settlement was named Aqincum. The sixty thousand or so residents that lived here included craftsmen and traders, the settlement later received civil rights and self-government status complete with its own civil leaders. Emperor Septimius Severus elevated the town to the rank of Roman imperial colony in 194 AD. A large outdoor area shows ruins that give us a clear picture of the building's layouts and patterns. The museum itself houses some real treasures. The Aqincum museum also recreates scenes from the times of the Romans. Feel free to check out a model of the settlement as it appeared during Roman rule.
