Series Summary

The drum is perhaps the oldest known musical instrument and its basic design has not changed in thousands of years. Far from today’s uses as a percussive foundation for pop music or for fueling marching band excitement, drumming has a more profound history as a method of communication, and as an implement of religious symbolism. In this free video series, learn some of the various drumming styles from an experienced drummer. He explains playing hi-hat, rim clicks and toms on the eight note on drums and about opening the hi-hat. Then he discusses playing rim clicks which is just playing the outer rim of a drum head. Finally, he moves on to playing the toms and incorporating two toms and the floor tom together.

Video Transcript

"So far in the eight note rock series what we are doing is talking about playing basic snare drum back beats, mixing up the bass drum a whole bunch of different hi hat patterns we can play. What we are going to talk about today is number one being able to open up the hi hat on some beats. Like that. And also playing a rim click this way rather then actually playing the head of the snare drum. Also we are going to talk about incorporating the toms into beats this way. So all of these are things that I'm going to be doing with a couple of Cd's on my snare drum just to dampen it a little for recording purposes, it's going to be better, it's going to let us hear some of the other parts of the drum set. And also everything we are going to be doing in this series is with eighth notes. So we are not going to be putting in any sixteenth notes this way. It's all. Working all with eighth notes so far. We'll get to sixteenth notes and that will be a completely different topic."
