"This next pattern is basically just a slightly modified version of the previous one that we did. We're still playing only on the third triplet partial for the base drum but we are only doing it on the first and second quarter notes. So it will sound like this. So when you are focusing on this third triplet partial what you don't want to be doing right now is something maybe you would want to do in the future is accenting the hi hat. You don't want to be playing, we're really not trying to do that. We're trying to keep the hi hat even. When we talk about a funk context or a soul context, R & B a lot of the great sounds will come from is not accenting the hi hat when you are playing the bass or snare."
