Thick painting is known as Impasto, after the Italian and I'll apply it with this knife again because this is a really good implement for doing Impasto painting. Right next to the other mark here I'll lay it down and it's nice and thick, just like that one. There's actually a big glob of paint here and you can see how I did two marks there. The first one had a great big charge of paint on it. And the second one kind of mitigates that but then it adds to it around the edges. And you can see a bit of a canvas texture shine through, especially in a certain light. But it's pretty thick, it's pretty chunky. And there is a natural limit to how thickly you can build up oil paint before it will be too thick to hold together and chunks of it will fall off eventually. You don't want it to be much more than this limit if you want a structurally sound oil painting. But Impasto, it's a mark that generally has a lot of vigor to it and lot of solidity.
