Summary: This is the foundation stitch for hand sewing. It is used to join two pieces of fabric together or for hand quilting. For seams, I would recommend doubled thread, for quilting one thread.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

While holding the fabric tautly, press the needle in and out of the fabric in a rocking motion. The smaller the stitches the more secure the seam will be. You can make several stitches at once or do one stitch at a time.

  2. Step 2

After each set of stitches pull your thread snugly before continuing. For a more professional and secure seam, you should try to make all your stitches the same size in length across the top. The stitches across the top of your fabric should be the same size, or larger, than the stitches at the bottom.

  3. Step 3

Top stitching is the exact same stitch as the running stitch, except used on top of the fabric as a decorative or detail stitch. Most commonly used to hold down seams near pockets, collars, hems. Stitches need to be uniform in size, width, and tension through garment. Smaller stitches are easier to work with and work better around curved areas.
