There are 2 different types of pedals that are available to your average mountain biker right now there is a clippings style or what is called a clip less pedal which is a misleading term because there use to be a lot of pedals that had cages like a toe clip. Where you stuck your foot in and there is a strap or got strap down so these are called clip less pedals even though this other type of pedal which is a flat pedal. Really this is a clip less pedal cause you are clipped in to this so when you hear people talking it is kind of confusing but this is a flat pedal and this is a clip less pedal in the Carmen jargon but the reason we use a flat pedal like this is because we are not comfortable being attached to our bike or the conditions are such that your feet are off the pedals so much that it is just it doesn't make any sense to be attached. So these pedals are pretty cool specific about them are they are very thin, got big old gripping pins, and definitely need some chin pads when you are riding in this pedals. As far as flat pedals go this is about how good as it gets. Nice big platform to fit your foot. With clip less pedals you have 2 fundamentals the different options as you can see these both use the retention mechanism by a company called Crank Brother's these are egg beaters pedals and these are maillot pedals. This one has a large platform kind of like the flat pedal and the reason your choose a clip less pedal with a platform is if you aren't clipped in like in the really rough trails something like that and you are taking your foot off a lot it gives you something to stand on. The way these pedals work is as you can see here, here is a shoe that is designed to work with this, t his is chalked full of mud but your would be surprise I could still clip in even with my shoe all muddy. As you can see I'm attached, the way I get out I can get out if I pull them up, pull them to the side I can only twist my heel to get it out. It is a pretty cool system there are others styles of clipping pedals or binding style pedals that have firmer engagement mechanism. But one of the great things about these is even when they are all muddy it is still a quick and easy in and out so there is a couple different kind of pedals for you to consider.
