Remove Handlebars on your Mountain Bike

"So I have already showed you how to change your stem out and now I want to show you how to remove the controls from your handle bars so you can possibly change your handle bar. Most mountain bikes now come with what we call lock on style grips which are bolted on. This particular model is from what you call fun it uses a 3 millimeter Allen wrench. The more come ODI lock on grips use a 2 1/2 millimeter Allen wrench which is pretty small. So you always want to be careful when you are using a nice fresh wrench so you don't strip those out cause it makes it really hard to remove the rest of your components. So in the case of this specific bike I'm going to use a Phillip head screw driver to remove this bar and plug. Bar and ply are nice because they keep dirt out of the end of your handle bars and also keep you from getting you know nice course action taken out of your abdomen by the end of the bar which is never pleasant. So it is pretty simple I'm just going to loosen up this one clamp and then loosen up the other one. Then my grip will slide right off, if I had a more traditional grip that was held on just by friction I want to use something like hairspray I want to pry up the end of the rubber portion of the grip, a screwdriver or something spray some hairspray in there and then pull it off. You can also use compress air if you have that available to you and most people don't so. Now this brake lever uses a 4 millimeter Allen wrench I'm just going to move these to the left. 4 millimeter wrenches are pretty common size for this sometimes you need a 5 and slide that off and then we are going to loosen moving by the left of this shifter. Take it off and sometimes you can see I can't pull it right off at the end of the bar cause there is not enough cable slack so what I can do is turn the handle bar towards where the cable stop is to get more slack to make it easier to take it off. So now you repeat with the other side and you have all the controls removed from your handle bar."
