Summary: How to plane the sides of a shadow box picture frame; learn all this and more in this free online arts and crafts video from a woodworking expert.
"Hi, this is Jon on behalf of Expert Village. In this video clip we will be plaining our sides. I went ahead and drew up this diagram just to show how our boards are going to be sitting. We have our short 9 1/2 inch board going along the bottom and our longer one going along the side. Now, since the bottom is 9 1/2 inches and I want to be able to fit a 8 inch picture in here, that means that each of these sides is exactly 3/4 of an inch. In addition, I have 11 1/2 inches on my outside and I want to be able to fit that 8x10 picture, so each of my top and bottom side pieces are going to have to be exactly 3/4 inches also. Now, right now my boards measures 15/16 inch thick. So I'm going to need to plain these down to 3/4. Any time that you send a board through the plainer that is under 12 inches, you want to follow it up by another board right behind it or a piece of scrap wood. Every couple passes you want to make sure and take a measurement just so that you don't go under that 3/4 mark. Our pieces are plain down to the correct width now."
