How to Frame Pictures in a Modern Framing Machine

"On behalf of Expert Village, I'm John of John's Design Center in Cottonwood. I'm going to tell you how to put frames together. This is the old fashioned way that we used to put frames together. We never had the right size drill for the right size nail. So, I found out that you just use the same nail as a drill. So, we are going to drill this frame just a little bit so that we can put our nails in. I'm using an old hammer for repairing bodies on automobiles, which I found was balanced just perfect with a big round head on it that works out really nice. We put two corners together. We do put glue on them, but with this demonstration, I don't think I'll use any glue. Now, what they teach you in framing school is that you leave this in the vice for twenty minutes to let the glue dry. Well, I never liked that because it took all day to make a couple of frames. The glue itself will hold the frame together while it's drying with the nails in it. You have to get your frame nice and tight in here. I haven't done this for twenty-five years because twenty-five years ago, I found out about a new machine. You get the two corners together. I like to make my work tables a little bigger so that I can clamp things on them. This way, I can clamp this frame vise on here and it gives me lots of room. Now we've got the frame all ready to go and it's all together. I had a man working for me years ago who's goal was to build a hundred of these in one day. He finally made it."
