"Hi, my name's Gail Hoffman. I'm from North Reddington Beach Florida and on behalf of Expert Village I'm going to demonstrate how to open a coconut. So some of the uses of coconut are to eat if just like this just as a snack. If has a lot of um, iron and zinc and potassium. It is also kind of high in saturated fat. So like anything high in saturated fat you eat it in moderation. A couple of different ways to prepare it is shredded coconut which would be used for desserts and with that you want to use the finer shredder or the larger shredder. And obviously it takes a lot of elbow grease but you can have some fresh-ready coconut for your baked dishes. Um some other things it is used for is the coconut milk. The coconut milk is used in a lot of different dishes. Actually in Malaysia where the coconut palm originated they used coconut a lot in their curries and in different kind of stews. And you can use them to make drinks. You can use the coconut milk and sugar to make a coconut cream and that is a very wonderful ingredient in pina coladas."

on 10/7/2009 Thanks! this was really helpful! my kids opened the coconut, then left me with the job of taking it out and peeling it. I see there is no trick, it just takes some "elbow grease" as you put it! I'm going to try to put it through the juicer to make coconut butter. REally great videos!
