Summary: Step by step instructions on how to tune a guitar to open D tuning with expert guitar tuning tips in this free music lesson video clip.
"Hi, I'm Mike Lais. On behalf of Expert Village, we are going to go over some guitar tuning techniques. Okay, this is "Open D Tuning", which is slightly different than the "Drop D", you're just adding to it really. So we're going to have, our strings are going to be tuned as follows: This is going to be a "D" for the 6th string, the 5th string will be "A" as usual, the 4th string will be a "D" as usual, and we're going to change the 3rd string from a "G" to an "F" sharp, and we're going to change the 2nd string from a "B" to an "A", that's a "B" right now, and then we're going to change the 1st string from an "E" to a "D". And the way we're going to go about this is really just kind of use all of our tuning knowledge and combine it all. So we're having our low string go from an "E" to a "D", so I'm going to drop that, just like we would in the "Drop D" tuning, check it with this. Okay, so now the next string we want to change is the 3rd string which is going to go from a "G" down to an "F" sharp. So if you remember in our relative tuning, you want to use the 5th fret for finding the "G". You're going to want to use the 4th fret to find the "F" sharp, just dropping the string down a half step. Okay so now we've done that. Now we're going to take the 2nd string and drop that to an ""A" which right now it's at a "B" so we're going to have to go down two half-steps, or a whole step, and a good way to do that is just take your "A" string already, or your 5th string, and go to it, like so. And now we can take the 5th fret of that string and match that to the 1st string. Now this should sound just like a "D" chord. And that is our "Open D Tuning"."
