"Hi, my name's Tom. This is for Expertvillage.com, and these are shortcuts to playing the electric guitar. We've talked about four bar chords for all music, and the lead guitar you can do with one pattern. Now we talked about this pattern. I just want to go over the fingering. If you're lazy and I don't care--I'm not going to be watching over your shoulder--you can really play this thing with just three fingers. You can play it basically--in fact I'm just using two fingers, my first finger and my third finger. So I'm starting two frets that are skipped on that first string, same pattern on the next string over, and then I go down on the next string so that I'm only skipping one fret, and then this last string I skip two again. Now, technically, if you want to do this right, a lot of you probably don't have a lot of strength in your little fingers, but you should use your little finger if you want to go on and be famous and make records and all that. Use that little finger. Kiss never did, mind you, but--so, when I leap two frets I'm using my little finger. When I'm only skipping one fret, I go down to this finger. Okay, so to practice this, what you want to do is just go up and down so that you don't even have to look at the neck of your guitar. And back down again. Start off slow, okay. Don't try and be a speed demon yet. Just practice it slow so that you're hitting the notes all the time. Try it in different positions too. Different frets, the same pattern."
