"Discarding and card signals. If your partner leads the ace or king of an off suit, again keep in mind spades are trumps, spades will be led later on in the hand. And, besides you don't waste high spades showing intent that you want the suit returned. If you lead a king and I drop a nine under it, I'm telling you that I like that suit. I mean a nine is a kind of a high card or a ten, I mean that's encouraging, it's saying to you- I really like that suit partner! You probably led king, from king, queen, jack, I've got the ace. I'll put the nine under it. If I play the deuce, I'm telling my partner that I don't like that suit. Now, let me tell you the little difference between body language and honest card signals. O.k., if you lead the king of diamonds and I go, "ah" that's cheating. That is table talking. If you lead the king of diamonds and I go, "bam" that's table talking too, because you're giving unnecessary information. But, if I just simply play the three in cadence without any excessive body language so I don't look like a third base coach in a baseball game, then I'm just basically telling you that's a bad suit, shift, or if I go up kind of high, the eight, the nine, the ten, I'm saying- I like it, I like it a lot, return the suit. Same thing with discards, if your partner is playing a winner and I have a chance to throw off suit, say he's playing a good club and I have an off suit diamond. If I play a high diamond, I'm saying to you, please return diamonds, I like that suit. If I play a low diamond, I'm saying to you, you might want to consider shifting. Now, some players will say any suit that is discarded at first opportunity, return it. Again, it depends on the partnership agreement. A high card is encouragement, a low card is discouragement and don't do it with flamboyance because then the opponents are going to say that's cheating. If you do it on the computer and you lag unnecessarily, they're going to say that's cheating. Play it in cadence, high card, you like it, low card, you don't like it."
