Series Summary

Comics can be very valuable, but you have to know what to look for when collecting them. First editions of iconic figures such as Batman and Superman can be worth a fortune. But then so can issues about obscure heroes and stories. Used book stores are full of them, but only a select few are worth buying as an investment. This series will tell you what to look for, along with tips for buying newspapers containing stories about historic events.

A comic book is a series of narrations that are used in conjunction with text to tell a story. Some of the earliest comics were simply a collection of previously published comic strips from newspapers bound into a booklet. They then evolved into a singular story that would even span several volumes and develop over long periods of time such as Spider-Man and Superman. These long series of comic books became known as graphic novels but that term is used vaguely. American comics are traditionally associated with super heroes but are still only limited to your imagination.

Video Transcript

"Expert Villagers, this is Jan, your fun antiquer, the happy treasure hunter. Yes, today I want to talk a little bit about something special, but before I do, I am going to tell you about myself. In case you do not know me, which of course everyone should by now at Expert Village, but I am your friendly, used-to-be college administrator who got really bored with everything after she got her PhD and decided that she did not care if people called her doctor anymore. It was boring. So what she did, what I did was decide to go into my lifelong passion. Follow your passion and that is collecting antiques and collectibles and history and all of that cool stuff. So, I decided to become certified as an appraiser. So, I do that too. I have some real fun. I go out and I make appraisals for people for insurance purposes or just if they want to know what something is worth. So they can decide if they want to keep it or can it. And we do appraisals and I also have an Antique Mall. A large Antique Mall in Pomona called Antique Avenue. Pomona is a wonderful area to visit. The antique district in Pomona, where there are numerous antique stores, probably at least twenty. And there is also a beautiful art colony on the other side where you can find all kinds of artistic treasures. But today, we are probably going to talk a little bit about paper like newspapers and comic books. "
