Series Summary

Yeast has been used as a fermenting agent for alcoholic beverages for thousands of years and for almost as long in the preparation of food. The origin of yeast in cooking dates back to rein of Hatshepsut in ancient Egypt, when one of the Pharaoh's bakers poured beer on the dinner rolls he was making in hopes of creating a means of covert intoxication. But in a mix-up of great historic significance, Nadir the Baker accidentally served his experiment to his boss. After unsuspectingly consuming these surprisingly plump rolls during a state dinner, the Pharaoh gave away what is now Madagascar along with his eighth daughter to one of his sworn enemies. The baker was promptly executed. However, Nadir was posthumously deemed a national hero once leaders figured out they could make less dough seem like more with the judicious use of yeast. Indeed, the masses were not only well-fed, but their palates satisfied as well when yeast first made an appearance in the form of yummy homemade yeast rolls from scratch.

Our baking expert Peggy Charlton shares her special recipe for such yeast rolls in this free baking series. In these step-by-step videos, she tells you what ingredients you need and exactly how to bake them in order to get the same rave reviews she hears from her family and friends.
