Did you know ancient Egyptians practiced depilating (shaving or cutting off the hair at the skin) their entire bodies in attempts to prevent infestations of lice and fleas? Requirements for shaving or cutting the hair are part of many religious and cultural traditions. In America and the West, deliberate hair removal has become more common for aesthetic, sexual, or political reasons. Shaping eyebrows is not a new practice but has surely become more widespread in North America and Europe in recent decades. Females, especially, are expected to shape their eyebrows into lines or arches, gracefully crafting the hairs to appear more attractive to the male gaze. Many women find such cultural norms to be oppressive and evidence of patriarchal sexual politics. Because of this, some women shave their heads or refuse to shave or sculpt body hair in efforts to resist the expectations of society.
In this free video series, our expert will teach you how to shape your eyebrows to open up your face and create a beautiful arched eyebrow. You will get step-by-step instructions for determining where your eyebrows should begin and end, what the proper texture should be, and how to fix the color of your eyebrows. You will also get tips on various eyebrow shaping methods, including plucking, waxing and threading. While our expert recommends getting your eyebrows shaped by a professional at some point in your life, it is important for many people to learn how to maintain and continue to shape eyebrows in the future.
"Hi! I'm Amelia and on behalf of Expert Village, we'll be talking about the perfect eyebrow. When you're starting out with your eyebrow, the first thing you're really going to need is something straight, a straight edge. That way you can measure where the eyebrow goes. You're also going to need your tweezers. I like a good slant edge tweezers, something that's got a fairly sharp edge to it to really grasp those tiny hairs. I also like these mascara wands that you can get any beauty supply place. They're great for just grooming the brow and brushing it up. You're also going to want some little manicure scissors. These are good for trimming those little excess brows that tend to get a little too long and stick out. I like to have some cotton on hand for when I'm tweezing I can use it to wipe off the eyebrow. Wipe off the eyebrow, hold the brow up, and also clean off the tweezers. Sometimes if you need to use a wax, you can use a wax. This is just a sugar wax that you don't need to heat up. Something like this you can use to actually remove the hair, or you can use just tweezers. Then when you're done, I like to use something to fill the brows in. Any spots or areas that don't quite cover up. She's got a little bit of an area right here that we'll probably fill in. These are just good to have on hand. These are the tools that you're going to need to tweeze eyebrows."
