Summary: Learn how to use labels in Gmail in this free instructional video.
"So now I am going to talk about an organizational feature of Gmail called, "Labels". Down here on the left side, right here, right below chat and labels are basically something you use to organize your emails, kind of like a folder, but the reason they are better is but the the reason they are better is because you can have messages, you can apply multiple labels to a message. So it does not have to be in just one place, it can be in multiple places. I will kind of show you how that works and how to create a label. The first way to create a label is I am just going to go to "Edit labels" right here and it brings up our settings for labels and then I am just going to go to "Create a new label". I am going to make a label called "Friends", so whenever my friends send me an email, I will apply that label to it. So their emails will always be in one place. So I will hit "Create" and then the label is here and I have the options to rename or delete it if I want. So go back to my inbox and to apply a label to a message, I will just select it by clicking the check box and go to "Actions" up here and then down here at the bottom you can apply a label. Then you see the label appears right here, right before you see the message right here. It is a pretty cool feature. There is also "color coding" that you can do. So you see over here, back over here, I can see my label and I color code it by clicking right here and choosing which ever color I want. Now it is easy to see in my inbox. The other way to create a label is to select a message, go to "More Actions" and then you can just do a new label right here. This pops up and you can enter a new label. I will enter "Pics" since there is a picture attached to that email. So then again I can go ahead and select any color I want and you can see that when it is bold and with the parenthesis here, there is one new email in the "Pics" section, because this email is unread. If I mark this email as "read", then there is no emails in the "Pics" section. Say there is a picture attached to this email, but Bob is also my friend so I can apply two labels as I said. So now this email has two labels, because it is appropriate for it to be both in the "Friends" label and the "Pics" label, while this one is only in the "Friends" label. So that is basically how labels work and it is a pretty cool way to organize. You can come up with some good ways to get real organized using labels. Like I said before, you have the "Edit labels" section if you ever need to rename or remove a label. When you actually click on a label, it brings up this box right here, which only shows you email messages that you have labeled for that particular label. That is how you use the "Label function" in Gmail."
