Planting Tulip Bulbs in Containers

"Hi, this is Yolanda Vanveen on behalf of Expert Village. In this segment, we're going to talk about how to plant tulip bulbs in containers. We have all seen them out in the garden and we see them come back in these beautiful gardens in Holland and in the Northwest and the side of the freeway. But how do you plant them in your yard? Here are a few tips. When you have a container, make sure that its deep enough so that the water isn't just going to rush out and its going to be dry for a long period of time. This is enough soil so that it will actually stay moist for a bit. I always plant in groups of three or more. So in this size pot I would get three bulbs, place them in a triangle and then cover them up about three inches deep. They don't have to be deeper than that. Some people swear you have to plant them six inches deep, but I've found in containers three inches is deep enough. Once I planted them, I just throw them out on the patio or out on my steps and this time of year the rain will get them and then in the spring its generally we have enough rain. So in the summertime I would water that at least once a month. Soak it so that its not going to be completely dry or I'd even add maybe some lilies to the top or a cala lilly on top so that you'll have summer blooms in the same container then once the blooms are done you just take that summer blooming bulb back out and you have blooms in the spring again with your tulips.
